Longer Life with LIPS

 6th Jun 2007

Longer Life with LipsTotton Pumps announces the development of its LIQUID INGRESS PROTECTION SYSTEM (LIPS) patent applied for. This truly innovative device has been designed to ensure a significant air gap between the lower bearings of the pump motor, and the level of liquid in the cooler bath.
For the last thirty years, the single largest mode of failure of both pumps and agitators has been the premature failure of the lower motor bearings, due to water ingress caused by its close proximity to the chilled water bath. As Totton's MD Gary Wyatt points out "there really is no application more demanding for any electric motor than being suspended in close proximity over a bath of ice cold water or Glycol. This situation is further aggravated by the difficulties associated with controlling the level of the cooling medium within the water bath. This simple mechanical device will guarantee that during continuous operation there is a minimum of 50mm clearance between the lower bearing and the level of liquid in the bath, thereby ensuring significantly extended levels of reliability and longevity".

This system represents the first major enhancement to this type of vertically mounted pump technology in the last thirty years, and the company anticipate a unanimous endorsement from OEMs and service organisations alike. Totton Pumps plan to standardise on this product enhancement across their entire range of SPC pumps and agitators by the end of 2007.
